The Sound of Jersey website

Sound.je is now open source under the AGPL. The site has been running for months, helping people find bands, music and gigs around Jersey and the Channel Islands. It's free to use, and now you can get the code too.

I've been rebuilding NestedBird since last September. The PHP has gone, and I'm using Java with Spring Boot for the backend and Vue for the frontend. I've been using the rebuild to learn those while making the site.

If someone wants to run it, I don't want them to have to work out my entire setup first. There's a Vagrant box that starts the site in a virtual machine with one command. I've also got generated documentation for the Java and JavaScript, and the tests run automatically.

I have given the project a new logo with the hopes it “gives people a false hope of STRONG + STABLE code”.

I've been working on this idea for about five years, since Indie Composers. NestedBird never managed to find a proper audience, but luckily Sound.je has people using it. I've even got assistant moderators helping me curate the content.

I am hoping that as time goes on, we can work more closely with the venues themselves, to get them to post the events that they are hosting. Rather than relying on the musicians to do it. That would give us the ability to maintain a curated dataset, without having to go foraging.

This entry came over from blog.haddon.me. I’ve tidied up the grammar and flow, bringing it closer to how I write now. I used AI to help with the grammar, structure and flow. I have dyslexia, and my writing often comes out as a rambling scrawl, so it can be hard to see what I was actually working on at the time. I think the tidied versions are easier to digest and more interesting to read. The artefacts got the same tidy-up while I was at it.
