I took part in a short video about working as a DevOps engineer at Portbase. It was a bit nerve-wracking, because whenever the camera was on, my mind seemed to empty itself of everything I wanted to say.

Apparently, knowing what I do for a living and explaining it to a camera are two separate skills.

DevOps Engineer - Portbase - 17 February 2020. The original recording, with its Dutch subtitles. About a minute and a half.

What I wanted to get across was how excited I was about the work, and how good the collaboration felt across the organisation.

The film also shows the office, conversations around desks and time at a whiteboard. I like having those parts alongside the interview. There are people around the work, which is easy to lose when describing a job through a list of tools.

I've written separately about giving application teams more control over their own systems. That's where the longer argument about how I want to do this job lives. This video puts some faces and a workplace beside it.

Making it was a lot of fun. I'm glad the finished video has some of that company in it too.

This entry came over from blog.haddon.me. I’ve tidied up the grammar and flow, bringing it closer to how I write now. I used AI to help with the grammar, structure and flow. I have dyslexia, and my writing often comes out as a rambling scrawl, so it can be hard to see what I was actually working on at the time. I think the tidied versions are easier to digest and more interesting to read. The artefacts got the same tidy-up while I was at it.
