At seventeen, my college class was set a menu system in a C# console app. The console asks you a question, you answer 1, 2 or 3, and it does something basic depending on your choice.
I turned it into a full game. It had a menu at the start, so it met the requirements. We had something-like two weeks to do the original assignment, and it felt far too long, to do something far too boring.
You play as the spinning blue X, hunting the spinning white X's while dodging their shots. The music and the controls ran on background threads, which made it a great project for learning how threading works.
